The Apple iPhone 17 Pro Max is the largest model in Apple’s 2025 Pro lineup. Apple announced it on September 9, 2025, alongside the iPhone 17 Pro, and sales began on September 19, 2025. The US price started at $1,199 for 256GB. Apple discontinued the phone in September 2026, after the iPhone 18 Pro Max arrived. Remaining stock may still be sold by retailers and carriers.
Design and display
The phone uses a heat-forged aluminum unibody with a laser-welded vapor chamber inside. Ceramic Shield 2 covers the front, and a Ceramic Shield panel sits on the back. The phone is rated IP68 for depths up to 6 meters for 30 minutes. It measures 163.4 x 78.0 x 8.75 mm and weighs 233 grams.
The 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED screen has a resolution of 2868 x 1320 pixels at 460 ppi. ProMotion adjusts the refresh rate up to 120Hz, and an Always-On mode is available. Peak brightness reaches 3000 nits outdoors and 1600 nits for HDR content. The color options are Cosmic Orange, Deep Blue and Silver.
Performance
The phone runs on the Apple A19 Pro chip. It has a 6-core CPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores. The 6-core GPU adds Neural Accelerators and hardware ray tracing, and the phone has 12GB of RAM.
Storage options are 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB. The 2TB version was a first for any iPhone, and there is no card slot. Connectivity includes 5G with mmWave in the US, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and NFC through Apple’s N1 chip. In addition, the USB-C port supports USB 3 speeds up to 10Gb/s and DisplayPort output.
Cameras
The rear system has three 48MP cameras. The main camera uses an f/1.78 lens with sensor-shift stabilization. The ultrawide camera covers a 120-degree field of view. A tetraprism telephoto gives 4x optical zoom at 100 mm. By cropping its sensor, it also offers 8x optical-quality zoom at 200 mm, the longest on an iPhone at launch.
Video recording reaches 4K Dolby Vision at 120 fps on the main camera. The phone also supports ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and Genlock. On the front, an 18MP Center Stage camera lets users take landscape selfies while holding the phone upright.
Battery and charging
Apple lists a 5,088 mAh battery in its EU product information. That is about 8.6% more than the iPhone 16 Pro Max. Reports based on regulatory filings put the version with a SIM tray at 4,823 mAh. Apple rates video playback at up to 39 hours.
With a 40W adapter, the phone charges to 50% in 20 minutes. MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging reach 25W. The box includes a USB-C cable but no power adapter.
Software and updates
The iPhone 17 Pro Max shipped with iOS 26 and supports Apple Intelligence. Apple does not promise a fixed number of years of updates. The US model is eSIM-only, while models for many other markets keep a nano-SIM tray.
Should you buy the iPhone 17 Pro Max?
The phone suits buyers who want a large screen, long battery life and a 4x telephoto camera. It also fits users who need a lot of storage, since it goes up to 2TB. However, Apple no longer produces it. The iPhone 18 Pro Max is its direct successor, so buyers should compare prices of both models before choosing.
