The Pixel 9a is the mid-range A-series phone from Google. Google announced it on March 19, 2025. Sales began on April 10, 2025, in the US, Canada and the UK. The starting price is $499 for the 128 GB model. In 2026, the Pixel 10a arrived as its successor. Still, the Pixel 9a remains on sale in several markets.
Design and display
The phone has a flat, slim profile with rounded edges. The frame is made of recycled aluminum, while the matte back is a composite (plastic) material. The body measures 154.7 x 73.3 x 8.9 mm and weighs 185.9 g. It is rated IP68 for dust and water resistance.
The 6.3-inch pOLED screen, which Google calls the Actua display, has a resolution of 1080 x 2424 pixels. Its refresh rate changes between 60 and 120 Hz. Peak brightness reaches 2,700 nits, and Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protects the front.
Performance
Inside is the Google Tensor G4, the same chip as in the Pixel 9 series. It pairs with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB or 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. There is no microSD slot. However, the Pixel 9a uses the older Exynos 5300 modem. As a result, it does not support Satellite SOS, which the other Pixel 9 models offer.
Cameras
The rear system has two cameras. The main camera uses a 48 MP sensor with an f/1.7 aperture and optical image stabilization. Next to it sits a 13 MP ultrawide camera with a 120-degree field of view. Super Res Zoom reaches up to 8x digitally.
Macro Focus and Add Me appear on an A-series phone for the first time. The rear cameras record 4K video at up to 60 fps. Meanwhile, the 13 MP front camera records 4K at 30 fps.
Battery and charging
The battery has a typical capacity of 5,100 mAh. Google rates it for more than 30 hours of use, or up to 100 hours with Extreme Battery Saver. Wired charging peaks at 23 W, and Qi wireless charging reaches 7.5 W. The box includes only a USB-C cable, so the charger is sold separately.
Software and updates
The Pixel 9a launched with Android 15. Google promises seven years of OS, security and Pixel Drop updates. In addition, Gemini is built in, and Gemini Nano runs on the device. Other features include Circle to Search, Call Screen and Car Crash Detection. A VPN by Google comes at no extra cost.
Should you buy the Pixel 9a?
The Pixel 9a suits buyers who want long software support and a large battery at a mid-range price. It also offers IP68 protection and wireless charging. On the other hand, it has 8 GB of RAM, slower 23 W charging and no telephoto camera. Satellite SOS is missing as well. Buyers who want the newer model can look at the Pixel 10a, its direct successor.
