The Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max is a 6.7-inch flagship that Apple announced on September 7, 2022. It went on sale on September 16, 2022, with a US starting price of $1,099 for 128GB. Apple discontinued it in September 2023, when the iPhone 15 Pro Max replaced it. Today, it is mostly found as a used or refurbished phone.
Design and display
The phone uses a stainless steel frame with textured matte glass on the back. The front is covered by Ceramic Shield, and the body is rated IP68. It measures 160.7 x 77.6 x 7.85 mm and weighs 240 grams.
The 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel has a resolution of 2796 x 1290 pixels at 460 ppi. ProMotion adjusts the refresh rate up to 120Hz and down to 1Hz. That low rate enables the Always-On display. Peak brightness reaches 1,600 nits for HDR and 2,000 nits outdoors. The notch was replaced by the Dynamic Island, a pill-shaped cutout that shows alerts and live activities.
Performance
The phone runs on the Apple A16 Bionic, the same chip as the smaller iPhone 14 Pro. It has a 6-core CPU with two performance cores and four efficiency cores. It also has a 5-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. The chip is built on a 4nm process and works with 6GB of RAM. Storage options are 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB, with no memory card slot.
Cameras
The camera system matches the iPhone 14 Pro. The 48MP Main camera has an f/1.78 lens and second-generation sensor-shift stabilization. A 12MP Ultra Wide camera handles macro shots, and a 12MP telephoto offers 3x optical zoom. The quad-pixel Main sensor also provides a 2x telephoto option. Video goes up to 4K at 60 fps with Dolby Vision HDR. The 12MP front camera has autofocus.
Battery and charging
Battery life is the main difference from the smaller model. Apple rates the Pro Max for up to 29 hours of video playback. The iPhone 14 Pro gets 23 hours. Independent sources list a 4,323 mAh battery. It charges through Lightning and reaches 50% in about 35 minutes with a 20W adapter. MagSafe wireless charging runs at up to 15W, and Qi charging at 7.5W. There is no power adapter in the box.
Software and updates
The phone launched with iOS 16 and was still supported by iOS 27 in 2026. Apple does not promise a fixed number of update years. In the US, the phone works with eSIM only, while other markets get a nano-SIM tray as well. It also supports Emergency SOS via satellite and Crash Detection.
Should you buy the iPhone 14 Pro Max?
Apple no longer produces or sells the iPhone 14 Pro Max. Its direct successor is the iPhone 15 Pro Max, which moved to USB-C. As a used phone, it suits buyers who want a large 120Hz screen and long battery life. Keep in mind the Lightning port and the 240-gram weight.
