The iPhone 15 Pro is the 6.1-inch Pro model of the 2023 Apple lineup. Apple announced it on September 12, 2023, and it went on sale on September 22, 2023. It started at $999 in the US with 128GB of storage. Apple discontinued it on September 9, 2024, after the iPhone 16 Pro was announced.
Design and display
This was the first iPhone with a titanium frame. The frame wraps a recycled aluminum substructure, and the back is textured matte glass. Ceramic Shield protects the front. The phone weighs 187 grams and is 8.25 mm thick.
The 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED panel has a resolution of 2556 x 1179 pixels at 460 ppi. ProMotion raises the refresh rate to 120Hz, and the panel supports Always-On mode. Apple rates peak brightness at 2000 nits outdoors and 1600 nits for HDR content. The phone carries an IP68 rating for water and dust.
A new Action button replaces the mute switch. It can open the camera, turn on the flashlight, start a voice memo or run a shortcut.
Performance
Inside is the Apple A17 Pro, built on a 3 nm process. Its 6-core CPU has two performance cores and four efficiency cores. The 6-core GPU adds hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and the phone has 8GB of RAM.
Storage options are 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB. There is no microSD slot. The USB-C port supports USB 3 speeds of up to 10Gb/s with a compatible cable.
Cameras
The rear system has three cameras. The 48MP main camera has an f/1.78 aperture and sensor-shift stabilization. It saves 24MP photos by default. A 12MP ultrawide camera covers a 120-degree field of view.
The 12MP telephoto camera offers 3x optical zoom at 77 mm. The larger 15 Pro Max uses a 5x tetraprism telephoto instead. A LiDAR scanner helps with focus and portraits in low light.
Video reaches 4K at 60 fps with Dolby Vision HDR. The phone can record ProRes and Log video, and it records spatial video at 1080p. The 12MP front camera also records 4K at 60 fps.
Battery and charging
The battery has a capacity of 3,274 mAh, according to regulatory filings and teardowns. Apple rates it for up to 23 hours of video playback. Apple says a 20W or higher adapter charges it to 50% in about 30 minutes.
Wireless charging reaches 15W with MagSafe and Qi2, and 7.5W with standard Qi. The box includes only a USB-C cable, without a power adapter.
Software and updates
The iPhone 15 Pro shipped with iOS 17. It supports Apple Intelligence, which arrived in later iOS updates. Apple does not publish a fixed update period for iPhones.
Safety features include Emergency SOS via satellite, Roadside Assistance via satellite and Crash Detection. Face ID handles secure unlocking.
Should you buy the iPhone 15 Pro?
Apple no longer produces or sells the iPhone 15 Pro as a new phone. Its direct successor is the iPhone 16 Pro. The 15 Pro suits buyers who want a compact titanium phone. It also offers a 3x telephoto and USB 3 speeds. It may also suit owners of older iPhones who plan an upgrade. Check the condition and warranty of any unit before you buy.
