The ASUS ROG Phone 6 is a gaming flagship announced on July 5, 2022. It reached the US in October 2022 at $999.99 for the 12 GB / 256 GB version. In Europe, it launched at €999. The phone is now discontinued, and three newer ROG generations have followed it.
Design and display
The phone has a 6.78-inch Samsung AMOLED panel with a 2448 x 1080 resolution and a 165 Hz refresh rate. Touch sampling reaches 720 Hz, and ASUS quotes 23 ms touch latency. Peak brightness is rated at 1,200 nits, with HDR10+ support. Gorilla Glass Victus covers the front, while Gorilla Glass 3 protects the back.
The body measures 173 x 77 x 10.3 mm and weighs 239 g. An IPX4 rating adds splash resistance, which was new for the series. The rear carries an Aura RGB dot-matrix logo. The regular colors are Phantom Black and Storm White. Two limited editions also exist: the BATMAN Edition in Night Black and the Diablo Immortal Edition in Hellfire Red.
Performance
Inside is the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 with a CPU clock of up to 3.2 GHz and an Adreno 730 GPU. Memory options are 12 GB or 16 GB of LPDDR5 RAM with 256 GB or 512 GB of UFS 3.1 storage. There is no microSD slot.
GameCool 6 cooling uses a larger vapor chamber, graphite sheets and a boron nitride thermal compound. The optional AeroActive Cooler 6 clips onto the back and adds active cooling. AirTrigger 6 ultrasonic buttons support gestures such as Dual Action and Gyroscope Aiming. The BATMAN Edition differs here, since it uses a MediaTek Dimensity 9000+ chip.
Cameras
The rear setup starts with a 50 MP Sony IMX766 sensor, sized 1/1.56 inches, with an f/1.9 lens. A 13 MP ultrawide and a 5 MP macro camera join it. There is no optical image stabilization. Video recording reaches 8K at 24 fps, and the front camera has 12 MP.
Battery and charging
The 6,000 mAh capacity comes from two 3,000 mAh cells placed around a centered chip. Wired charging reaches 65 W, and the 65 W adapter is included in the box. Two USB-C ports are available, one on the bottom and one on the side. Wireless charging is not supported.
Software and updates
The phone shipped with Android 12 and ROG UI. ASUS promised two Android upgrades and two years of security updates. Those promises have now run out, so the phone is past its stated support window.
Should you buy the ROG Phone 6?
This phone is no longer produced, so buyers would rely on remaining stock or the used market. Its 165 Hz screen, shoulder-style triggers, headphone jack and front speakers still suit mobile gamers. However, its update period has ended and it lacks wireless charging. Buyers who want a newer ROG model can look at the successor, the ROG Phone 7.
