The Motorola Moto G17 is an entry-level 4G phone. Motorola announced it on January 29, 2026, together with the Moto G17 Power. It is sold in Europe, the UK and Latin America, but not in the US. The phone aims at buyers on a tight budget. It offers a large screen, a headphone jack and a 50 MP camera.
Design and display
The G17 has a 6.72-inch LCD panel with a 2400 x 1080 resolution. That works out to about 392 pixels per inch. The refresh rate stays at 60 Hz. Motorola rates brightness at 800 nits typical and 1,050 nits in high-brightness mode. Corning Gorilla Glass 3 covers the screen.
The body measures 165.67 x 75.98 x 8.17 mm. The back has a leather-like vegan leather finish in three Pantone colors: Alaskan Blue, Evening Blue and Bordeaux. An IP64 rating protects it from dust and water splashes. A side-mounted fingerprint reader handles unlocking.
Performance
Inside is the MediaTek Helio G81, sold here under the name Helio G81 Extreme. It has two Cortex-A75 cores at 2.0 GHz, six Cortex-A55 cores at 1.7 GHz and a Mali-G52 MC2 GPU. This is the same chip family the Moto G15 used. RAM depends on the market: 4 GB in the UK and Brazil, and 8 GB in some EU countries. Storage is 128 GB or 256 GB, and a microSD slot adds up to 1 TB.
Connectivity is basic. There is no 5G, and Wi-Fi tops out at Wi-Fi 5. You still get Bluetooth 5.4, NFC in most markets, a 3.5 mm jack and stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos.
Cameras
The main camera uses a 50 MP Sony LYTIA 600 sensor with an f/1.88 lens. A 5 MP ultrawide camera and a flicker sensor sit next to it. There is no optical stabilization. The front camera jumps to 32 MP, up from 8 MP on the Moto G15. Both the rear and front cameras record video at up to 1080p and 30 fps.
Battery and charging
A 5,200 mAh battery powers the phone. Motorola quotes up to 55.8 hours of battery life. Wired TurboPower charging runs at 18W. In the UK and EU, the box has a USB-C cable but no charger. The Brazilian version ships with a 20W charger. There is no wireless charging.
Software and updates
The G17 runs Android 15 with Motorola’s Hello UX. It includes Gemini, Circle to Search and Google Photos editing tools. Motorola promises security updates for two years, until February 2028. It has not announced any Android version upgrades.
Should you buy the Moto G17?
The G17 suits buyers who need a basic phone with a big screen, long battery life and expandable storage. The headphone jack and IP64 rating also help. However, it lacks 5G and a fast display, and it gets no OS upgrades. Need more battery? The Moto G17 Power offers 6,000 mAh and 30W charging in a similar body.
