The OnePlus 12R is a performance-focused phone that sits below the OnePlus 12. It made its global debut on January 23, 2024, and reached US stores on February 13, 2024. Prices started at $499.99 for 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. In China, the same phone is sold as the OnePlus Ace 3. The 12R was the first R-series model sold in North America and Europe. OnePlus no longer sells it in its US and UK stores, where the 13R has taken its place.
Design and display
The 12R uses a 6.78-inch AMOLED ProXDR panel with LTPO 4.0. Its resolution is 2780 x 1264 pixels, which works out to 450 ppi. The refresh rate adjusts from 1 Hz to 120 Hz. OnePlus rates the screen at 4,500 nits of peak brightness and 1,600 nits in high brightness mode.
Gorilla Glass Victus 2 covers the display. The frame is matte aluminum, and the back is glass. The phone measures 8.8 mm thick and weighs 207 grams. It has an IP64 rating for dust and splash resistance, plus the OnePlus Alert Slider.
Performance
Inside is the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, Qualcomm’s flagship chip from 2023, with an Adreno 740 GPU. The US model comes with 8 GB or 16 GB of LPDDR5X RAM. Storage is 128 GB or 256 GB of UFS 3.1, and there is no microSD slot. In the UK and Europe, only the 16 GB and 256 GB version was sold.
Cameras
The main camera uses a 50 MP Sony IMX890 sensor with an f/1.8 lens and optical stabilization. It is joined by an 8 MP ultrawide camera with a 112-degree view and a 2 MP macro camera. The rear cameras record 4K video at up to 60 fps. On the front, a 16 MP camera records 1080p video at 30 fps.
Battery and charging
The 12R has a 5,500 mAh dual-cell battery. In the US, it supports 80W SUPERVOOC wired charging. Models sold in the UK, Europe and India support 100W instead. The charger comes in the box. However, there is no wireless charging.
Software and updates
The phone launched with OxygenOS 14 based on Android 14. OnePlus promised three major Android upgrades and four years of security updates from launch. The US model supports eSIM next to its dual nano-SIM slot, while the UK and Indian versions do not. Other features include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, stereo speakers and an IR blaster.
Should you buy the OnePlus 12R?
The 12R suits buyers who want a flagship chip and a large battery for a midrange price. It also charges quickly and includes a charger. On the other hand, it lacks wireless charging and a telephoto camera, and its water resistance is only IP64.
Keep in mind that the 12R is no longer produced, and OnePlus has removed it from its main stores. Its direct successor is the OnePlus 13R. Security updates are promised until early 2028, four years after launch.
