The REDMI A2+ is an entry-level Android phone that Xiaomi announced globally on March 24, 2023. It is the REDMI A2 with one addition: a fingerprint sensor on the back. In India, it launched in May 2023 in a single 4 GB / 64 GB version. POCO sold the same phone in India as the POCO C51. The A2+ was not sold in Europe or the US.
Design and display
The body is plastic, with a leather-like texture on the back. A round fingerprint reader sits below the camera module. The phone weighs 192 g and measures 164.9 x 76.75 x 9.09 mm. Colors are Black, Light Blue and Light Green; India used the names Classic Black, Aqua Blue and Sea Green.
The 6.52-inch LCD has a waterdrop notch and an HD+ resolution of 1600 x 720 pixels. That gives about 269 ppi. The refresh rate is 60 Hz.
Performance
The phone runs on the MediaTek Helio G36. This octa-core chip reaches up to 2.2 GHz. Graphics run on a PowerVR GE8320 GPU. Xiaomi’s global page lists 2 GB or 3 GB of LPDDR4X RAM with 32 GB of eMMC 5.1 storage. The Indian model has 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. A dedicated microSD slot takes cards up to 1 TB alongside two SIM cards.
The phone supports 4G, Wi-Fi 4 on the 2.4 GHz band and Bluetooth 5.0. It has no 5G. Charging and data use a Micro-USB port. A 3.5 mm headphone jack and FM radio are included.
Cameras
The rear setup combines an 8 MP main camera (f/2.0) with a QVGA auxiliary lens. The front camera has 5 MP and an f/2.2 lens. Both sides record video at up to 1080p and 30 fps. There is no ultrawide or telephoto camera.
Battery and charging
The battery holds 5,000 mAh. Charging is limited to 10 W, and Xiaomi includes a 10 W charger in the box. Topping up the large battery at this speed takes several hours.
Software and updates
Xiaomi’s spec pages list Android 12 (Go edition). Indian launch reports say the phone shipped with Android 13 (Go edition). Xiaomi’s official list shows security updates until March 24, 2026, which is three years after launch. No major Android upgrades were promised.
Should you buy the REDMI A2+?
The REDMI A2+ fits buyers who want the cheapest REDMI with a fingerprint sensor. It offers a big battery, a microSD slot and a headphone jack. However, its security updates have ended, and it still uses Micro-USB. It is also no longer part of Xiaomi’s current lineup. The REDMI A3 is the newer model in this series.
