The REDMI A2 is an entry-level Android phone that Xiaomi announced globally on March 24, 2023. It reached Germany in April 2023. The official price there was €109.90 for 2 GB / 32 GB. India followed in May 2023 with more memory options. The phone is now discontinued. It is gone from Xiaomi’s current lineup, and its security support ended in March 2026.
Design and display
The A2 has a plastic body with a leather-like texture on the back. It weighs 192 g and measures 164.9 x 76.75 x 9.09 mm. Xiaomi sold it in Black, Light Blue and Light Green. In India, the same colors were called Classic Black, Aqua Blue and Sea Green.
The front holds a 6.52-inch LCD with a small waterdrop notch. Its HD+ resolution is 1600 x 720 pixels, which works out to about 269 ppi. The panel refreshes at 60 Hz. There is no fingerprint reader; the A2+ adds one on the back.
Performance
Inside is the MediaTek Helio G36, an octa-core chip clocked up to 2.2 GHz. Graphics run on a PowerVR GE8320 GPU. Memory starts at 2 GB of LPDDR4X RAM with 32 GB of eMMC 5.1 storage. Other versions offered 3 GB or 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage, depending on the market. A dedicated microSD slot accepts cards up to 1 TB, next to two SIM cards.
Connectivity is basic. The phone supports 4G, Wi-Fi 4 on the 2.4 GHz band only, and Bluetooth 5.0. It has no NFC. It still charges through a Micro-USB port, and it keeps a 3.5 mm headphone jack and FM radio.
Cameras
The back pairs an 8 MP main camera (f/2.0) with a QVGA auxiliary lens. Both the rear and the 5 MP front camera (f/2.2) record video at up to 1080p and 30 fps. There is no ultrawide or telephoto camera.
Battery and charging
A 5,000 mAh battery powers the phone. Charging tops out at 10 W, and a 10 W charger comes in the box. With this speed, a full charge takes a long time.
Software and updates
Xiaomi’s spec page lists Android 12 (Go edition). Indian units and later European units shipped with Android 13 (Go edition) instead. The Go edition is a lighter Android build for phones with little memory. Xiaomi’s official list shows security updates for three years, until March 24, 2026. No major Android upgrades were promised.
Should you buy the REDMI A2?
The REDMI A2 suited buyers who needed calls, messaging and basic apps on a very small budget. Its strengths are the large battery, the dedicated microSD slot and the headphone jack. However, it is no longer produced, and its security updates have ended. Its successor, the REDMI A3, adds USB-C and a 90 Hz display. A newer phone is the safer choice today.
