The TCL 40 NXTPAPER is a budget phone built around a matte, paper-like screen. TCL announced it on August 29, 2023, together with the TCL 40 NXTPAPER 5G. This is the 4G version, and the two models differ in more than the network. In Europe, it launched at €199 in September 2023. In the UK, it cost £179.99.

Design and display

The phone has a 6.78-inch FHD+ LCD with a 90Hz refresh rate. TCL calls the panel NXTPAPER. Its matte surface cuts reflections and resists fingerprints. TÜV certifies the screen for low blue light and reflection-free viewing.

The software adds color paper and ink paper reading modes. An optional T-Pen works with the screen, and it comes with a matching case in some countries. The body is 7.89 mm thick and weighs 195 g. TCL sold it in two colors: Midnight Blue and Opalescent, a shimmering finish that shifts from blue to yellow.

Performance

Inside is the MediaTek Helio G88, an entry-level 12 nm chip. It pairs with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. Up to 8 GB of storage can work as extra virtual RAM. A microSD slot adds more space.

The 5G sibling uses a Dimensity 6020 chip instead. It also has a smaller 6.6-inch HD+ screen, 6 GB of RAM and slower 15W charging.

Cameras

The rear setup has a 50 MP main camera with an f/1.8 lens. A 5 MP ultrawide and a 2 MP macro camera join it. The main camera has no optical stabilization. On the front, a 32 MP selfie camera sits in a punch-hole cutout. The 5G model has an 8 MP selfie camera and no ultrawide.

Battery and charging

The battery holds 5,010 mAh. Wired charging runs at 33W, and TCL claims a 50% charge in 30 minutes. There is no wireless charging.

Software and updates

The phone shipped with Android 13 and TCL UI 5.0. Other features include NFC, a 3.5 mm headphone jack and stereo speakers with DTS sound. A fingerprint reader sits in the side power button. TCL has not published a clear update promise for this model on its product page.

Should you buy the TCL 40 NXTPAPER?

This phone suits people who read a lot on their phone and want less glare. The large matte screen, 256 GB of storage and fast charging stand out at this price. The Helio G88 is slow for demanding games, though. Buyers who want 5G should look at the TCL 40 NXTPAPER 5G. Keep in mind that the 5G model has a lower-resolution screen.
