How we picked
We rank every phone that is on sale and was announced in the last two years by its camera score. The score looks at main sensor size, optical zoom, the ultrawide camera, stabilization, video modes and the front camera. Only phones officially sold in the US or Europe are included. Scores are calculated from specs, so every phone is judged by the same rules. Learn more about how we rate phones.
What to look for
Sensor size beats megapixels
A larger main sensor collects more light, which means cleaner night shots and more natural background blur. A 50 MP camera with a big sensor usually beats a 200 MP camera with a small one.
Zoom needs a telephoto lens
Digital zoom only crops the photo. For sharp shots of faraway subjects, look for a telephoto or periscope lens with 3× to 5× optical zoom.
Don't forget video
4K at 60 fps with optical stabilization is the baseline for smooth video today. If you film a lot, also check the front camera, which is often weaker.
FAQ
What is the best camera phone right now?
Right now it's the OPPO Find X9 Ultra, with a PhoneRanked score of 9.4 out of 10 and a camera score of 9.0. The Xiaomi 17 Ultra and the Xiaomi 15 Ultra round out the top three.
How do you score cameras without taking photos?
Our camera score comes from hardware specs: sensor size, lenses, stabilization and video modes. Specs don't capture image processing, so check sample photos in reviews before you pick one of the top phones.
How often is this list updated?
Automatically. When we add a phone or update its specs, the list is rebuilt within a few minutes. The date at the top of the page shows the last update.
