The Google Pixel 9 Pro XL is a large-screen flagship phone. Google announced it on August 13, 2024, and it went on sale on August 22, 2024. Prices started at $1,099 for the 128GB model. The phone is now discontinued. Google no longer sells it, and the Pixel 10 Pro XL has replaced it.
Design and display
The Pixel 9 Pro XL is the bigger of Google’s two Pro phones for 2024. It shares its cameras, chip and memory with the 6.3-inch Pixel 9 Pro. The differences are the screen size, the battery and charging speed.
The 6.8-inch Super Actua display is an LTPO OLED panel with a 1344 x 2992 resolution and 486 ppi. Its refresh rate adapts from 1 to 120Hz. Brightness reaches up to 2,000 nits for HDR content and up to 3,000 nits at peak. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protects the front and the matte back, and the frame is polished aluminum. The phone is rated IP68 and weighs 221 g.
Performance
The phone runs on the Google Tensor G4, a 4nm chip with eight CPU cores and a Mali-G715 GPU. A Titan M2 chip handles security. All versions have 16GB of RAM. Storage options are 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB with UFS 3.1. There is no microSD slot.
Cameras
The rear system has three cameras. The main camera uses a 50 MP 1/1.31-inch sensor with an f/1.68 lens and optical stabilization. It is joined by a 48 MP ultrawide with autofocus and a 48 MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom. Super Res Zoom goes up to 30x.
On the front, a 42 MP camera with autofocus handles selfies and 4K video. The rear cameras record 4K at up to 60 fps. With Video Boost, the phone can deliver 8K at 30 fps through cloud processing.
Battery and charging
The battery has a typical capacity of 5,060 mAh. Wired charging peaks at 37W with Google’s 45W charger, which is sold separately. Google says this reaches about 70% in 30 minutes. Wireless charging runs at up to 23W on the Pixel Stand (2nd gen) and 12W on Qi EPP chargers. Battery Share can charge other devices wirelessly.
Software and updates
The Pixel 9 Pro XL launched with Android 14. Google promises seven years of OS, security and Pixel Drop updates. The phone also supports Satellite SOS, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3 and Ultra-Wideband. Security includes an ultrasonic under-display fingerprint reader. The SIM setup pairs one nano-SIM with an eSIM.
Should you buy the Google Pixel 9 Pro XL?
The Pixel 9 Pro XL fits buyers who want a large screen, a 5x telephoto and a bigger battery. The seven-year update promise adds long-term value. However, Google no longer produces or sells it, so only remaining retailer stock is available. The successor is the Pixel 10 Pro XL.
