The Google Pixel 9 Pro is a compact flagship phone with a 6.3-inch screen. Google announced it on August 13, 2024, and it went on sale in the US on September 4, 2024. Prices started at $999 for the 128GB model. The phone is now discontinued. Google no longer sells it, and the Pixel 10 Pro has replaced it.
Design and display
For the first time, Google made its Pro model in two sizes. The Pixel 9 Pro is the smaller one, while the Pixel 9 Pro XL has a 6.8-inch screen. Apart from screen size, battery and charging, the two phones share the same specs.
The 6.3-inch Super Actua display is an LTPO OLED panel with a 1280 x 2856 resolution and 495 ppi. Its refresh rate adapts from 1 to 120Hz. Brightness reaches up to 2,000 nits for HDR content and up to 3,000 nits at peak. Gorilla Glass Victus 2 covers both the front and the matte back, and the frame is polished aluminum. The phone is rated IP68 and weighs 199 g.
Performance
Inside is the Google Tensor G4, built on a 4nm process with eight CPU cores and a Mali-G715 GPU. It works with a Titan M2 security chip. Every configuration has 16GB of RAM. Storage options are 128GB, 256GB, 512GB and 1TB, all using UFS 3.1. There is no microSD slot.
Cameras
The rear camera bar holds three cameras. The main camera has a 50 MP 1/1.31-inch sensor with an f/1.68 lens and optical stabilization. Next to it is a 48 MP ultrawide with autofocus for macro shots. A 48 MP telephoto adds 5x optical zoom. Super Res Zoom reaches up to 30x.
The front camera is a 42 MP unit with autofocus. The rear cameras record 4K video at up to 60 fps. Video Boost can produce 8K at 30 fps through cloud processing. Super Res Zoom Video works up to 20x.
Battery and charging
The battery has a typical capacity of 4,700 mAh. Wired charging peaks at 27W with Google’s 45W charger, which is sold separately. Google says this reaches about 55% in 30 minutes. Wireless charging runs at up to 21W on the Pixel Stand (2nd gen) and 12W on Qi EPP chargers. Battery Share lets the phone charge other devices wirelessly.
Software and updates
The Pixel 9 Pro launched with Android 14. Google promises seven years of OS, security and Pixel Drop updates. Other features include Satellite SOS, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, Ultra-Wideband, stereo speakers and an ultrasonic under-display fingerprint reader. The SIM setup combines one nano-SIM with an eSIM.
Should you buy the Google Pixel 9 Pro?
The Pixel 9 Pro suits buyers who want a full Pro camera system in a 6.3-inch phone. Its long update promise is another strength. However, Google no longer produces or sells it, so stock is limited to remaining retailer units. The successor is the Pixel 10 Pro.
