The Google Pixel Fold is Google’s first foldable phone. It was announced on May 10, 2023, and went on sale on June 27, 2023. In the US, it started at $1,799 with 256 GB of storage. It is a book-style foldable aimed at buyers who want a phone that opens into a small tablet. Google no longer sells it, and the Pixel 9 Pro Fold replaced it.
Design and display
The inner screen is a 7.6-inch OLED panel with a 2208 x 1840 resolution and a 6:5 aspect ratio. It runs at up to 120Hz and reaches 1,450 nits at peak. The outer cover screen measures 5.8 inches and also refreshes at up to 120Hz. Its wide 17.4:9 shape makes the folded phone feel close to a regular phone.
Folded, the Pixel Fold measures 139.7 x 79.5 x 12.1 mm and weighs 283 g. Unfolded, it is 5.8 mm thin. The cover screen and the back use Gorilla Glass Victus, and the frame is polished aluminum. The hinge is made of stainless steel and holds the screen at many angles. The phone is rated IPX8 for water resistance, but it has no dust rating.
Performance
Inside is the Google Tensor G2 chip, the same one used in the Pixel 7 series. It pairs with 12 GB of LPDDR5 RAM. Storage options are 256 GB and 512 GB of UFS 3.1, and there is no microSD slot. A Titan M2 security chip handles sensitive data.
Cameras
The rear camera bar holds three cameras. The main sensor has 48 MP, an f/1.7 lens and optical stabilization. Next to it are a 10.8 MP ultrawide camera and a 10.8 MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom. The rear cameras record 4K video at up to 60 fps. The cover screen has a 9.5 MP selfie camera that also records 4K at 60 fps. The inner screen adds an 8 MP camera for video calls.
Battery and charging
The battery has a typical capacity of 4,821 mAh. Google rates it for more than 24 hours of use. With Extreme Battery Saver, it can last up to 72 hours. Wired charging tops out at 21W, and Qi wireless charging reaches 7.5W. There is no reverse wireless charging, and no charger comes in the box.
Software and updates
The phone launched with Android 13. Google first promised three years of OS upgrades. In December 2024, it extended this to five years of both OS and security updates. Support runs for five years from the first US Google Store sale date.
Should you buy the Pixel Fold?
The Pixel Fold suits buyers who want a foldable with a wide, phone-like cover screen and a capable camera. Keep in mind that it is no longer produced, and Google has stopped selling it. Its 2022 chip and slow charging also lag behind newer models. The Pixel 9 Pro Fold is its direct successor and a newer alternative.
