The OPPO Reno12 5G is a mid-range phone. OPPO announced it for Europe and global markets on June 18, 2024, next to the Reno12 Pro 5G. According to Notebookcheck, OPPO priced it at €499 in Europe with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. The phone is not sold in the US. A Chinese phone also named Reno12 launched in May 2024, but it uses a different chip and cameras.
Design and display
The Reno12 5G has a 6.7-inch AMOLED screen with curves on the two long edges. Its resolution is 2412 x 1080 pixels, or 394 ppi. The panel refreshes at up to 120Hz and reaches up to 1,200 nits in sunlight. Corning Gorilla Glass 7i covers the display.
The phone measures about 161.4 x 74.1 x 7.57 mm and weighs about 177 grams. OPPO uses an internal alloy framework for extra strength. The body has an IP65 rating against dust and water splashes. Colors include Matte Brown, Sunset Pink and Astro Silver, depending on the market.
Performance
Inside is the MediaTek Dimensity 7300, sold by OPPO as the Dimensity 7300-Energy. This 4nm chip pairs with an Arm Mali-G615 GPU. Storage is UFS 3.1, and OPPO lists microSD card support. The Reno12 Pro 5G uses the same chip, so everyday speed should be similar.
Connectivity includes Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.4 and NFC. An infrared blaster lets the phone work as a remote control.
Cameras
The rear has three cameras. The main camera has 50MP, an f/1.8 lens and optical image stabilization. An 8MP ultrawide camera and a 2MP macro camera complete the setup. Unlike the Pro model, there is no telephoto lens. The front camera has 32MP and autofocus. Video goes up to 4K at 30 frames per second on both sides.
Battery and charging
The battery has a typical capacity of 5,000mAh. OPPO supports 80W SUPERVOOC wired charging with its own chargers. In OPPO lab tests, the battery keeps over 80% of its capacity after four years of daily use. There is no wireless charging, and the UK box has no charger.
Software and updates
The phone launched with ColorOS 14.1 based on Android 14. It includes OPPO AI tools such as AI Eraser, AI Clear Face and AI Studio. Some tools need an OPPO account and an internet connection. OPPO has not published an official update promise for this model.
Should you buy the Reno12 5G?
The Reno12 5G suits buyers who want a slim phone with fast 80W charging and a bright curved screen. It shares its chip and battery with the Reno12 Pro 5G. However, it lacks a telephoto camera and wireless charging. OPPO has since released the Reno13 5G as its successor.
