The Samsung Galaxy A04s is an entry-level 4G phone that Samsung announced on August 31, 2022. It first appeared on Samsung’s websites in the Nordic countries, and sales in Germany began in September 2022. In Europe, it launched at €169. The phone is now discontinued, and the Galaxy A05s replaced it in 2023.
Design and display
The body is made of plastic, with a glossy back and three separate camera rings. It measures 164.7 x 76.7 x 9.1 mm and weighs 195 grams. Samsung sold it in Copper, White, Green and Black. Not every color was offered in every country.
The front has a 6.5-inch PLS LCD with HD+ resolution of 720 x 1600 pixels. It runs at up to 90 Hz, which was rare in this price class in 2022. A waterdrop notch holds the selfie camera. Samsung does not list any water or dust rating.
Performance
Inside is the Exynos 850, an 8 nm chip with eight Cortex-A55 cores at 2 GHz. Graphics run on a Mali-G52 MP1 GPU. It comes with 3 GB or 4 GB of RAM. Storage options are 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB, depending on the market.
A dedicated microSD slot accepts cards up to 1 TB, next to two nano-SIM slots. In Geekbench 6, retail units score about 215 points single-core and 880 points multi-core. Reviewers noted occasional stutters in daily use, especially on the 3 GB model.
Cameras
The rear setup has three cameras. The main camera has 50 MP and an f/1.8 lens with autofocus. It is joined by a 2 MP macro camera and a 2 MP depth sensor. There is no ultrawide camera and no optical stabilization.
Video recording tops out at 1080p and 30 frames per second. On the front, a 5 MP camera with an f/2.2 lens handles selfies and video calls.
Battery and charging
The battery has a typical capacity of 5,000 mAh. Samsung rates it for up to 21 hours of LTE browsing. Video playback lasts up to 22 hours. The phone supports 15W wired charging over USB-C. No charger is included in the box, only a USB-C cable.
Software and updates
The Galaxy A04s launched with Android 12 and One UI Core 4.1. Samsung promised two major Android upgrades, and the phone later received Android 13. Security updates arrived quarterly. In January 2024, Samsung removed the phone from its regular security update list.
Other features include NFC on European models, a 3.5 mm headphone jack, Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0. The power button doubles as a fingerprint reader. There is a single mono speaker.
Should you buy the Galaxy A04s?
The Galaxy A04s is no longer produced, and its regular security updates have ended. It suits buyers who need a basic phone for calls, messaging and light apps. The large battery, microSD slot and headphone jack are its main strengths.
The slow chip, small base storage and lack of current security updates are clear drawbacks today. Buyers who want a newer Samsung phone in the same class should look at the Samsung Galaxy A05s.
