The Samsung Galaxy A55 5G is an upper mid-range phone. Samsung announced it on March 11, 2024, together with the Galaxy A35 5G. In Europe, it launched at €479 for the 8GB + 128GB model. In the UK, the same version cost £439. Samsung did not sell this model in the US. The phone has since been discontinued, and the Galaxy A56 5G replaced it.
Design and display
The Galaxy A55 5G uses a 6.6-inch Super AMOLED panel with a 1080 x 2340 resolution. The refresh rate goes up to 120Hz, and peak brightness reaches 1,000 nits in high brightness mode. Vision Booster adjusts color and contrast in direct sunlight. The screen also supports HDR10+.
Gorilla Glass Victus+ covers both the front and the back. The frame is made of aluminum. The phone measures 161.1 x 77.4 x 8.2 mm and weighs 213 g. It carries an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance.
Performance
Inside is Samsung’s own Exynos 1480, built on a 4nm process. Its eight cores run at up to 2.75GHz. The Xclipse 530 GPU handles graphics. Samsung offered 8GB or 12GB of RAM with 128GB or 256GB of storage. A hybrid slot accepts microSD cards up to 1TB.
Cameras
The rear setup has three cameras. The 50MP main camera has an f/1.8 lens, autofocus and optical image stabilization. It is joined by a 12MP ultrawide camera and a 5MP macro camera. There is no telephoto lens, so zoom is digital only, up to 10x.
The front camera has 32MP and an f/2.2 lens. Rear video recording tops out at 4K at 30 fps. Samsung also highlighted improved low-light photos and Night Portrait mode.
Battery and charging
A 5,000mAh battery powers the phone. Samsung rates it for up to 25 hours of LTE web browsing. Wired charging peaks at 25W, but the charger is sold separately. The phone does not support wireless charging.
Software and updates
The Galaxy A55 5G shipped with Android 14 and One UI 6.1. Samsung promised four generations of OS upgrades and five years of security updates. The UK specs page lists security support until March 31, 2028. Samsung Knox Vault adds hardware-based protection for passwords and encryption keys.
Should you buy the Galaxy A55 5G?
The Galaxy A55 5G suits buyers who want a sturdy mid-range phone with long software support. Its aluminum frame, IP67 rating and microSD slot are useful extras. However, Samsung no longer produces it, and the official stores have stopped selling it. If you want a current model, look at its successor, the Galaxy A56 5G.
