The Motorola Edge (2022) is a mid-range 5G phone for North America. Motorola announced it on August 18, 2022, and it went on sale at T-Mobile on September 1, 2022. The T-Mobile model cost $498, while the unlocked 8GB/256GB model listed at $599.99. Motorola has since discontinued it, and the Edge (2023) is its successor.
Design and display
The phone has a 6.6-inch flat OLED panel with a resolution of 2400 x 1080 pixels. It refreshes at up to 144Hz, supports HDR10+ and reaches a claimed peak of 1,300 nits. Gorilla Glass 3 covers the display.
The body measures 160.86 x 74.24 x 7.99 mm and weighs 170 grams. Motorola used a plastic PMMA body rather than glass. The only color is Mineral Gray. An IP52 rating covers dust and light splashes, but the phone is not waterproof.
Performance
The Edge (2022) was the first phone with the Dimensity 1050. This 6nm chip has two Cortex-A78 cores at 2.5GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0GHz. It uses a Mali-G610 MC3 GPU.
Versions came with 6GB or 8GB of RAM and 128GB or 256GB of storage. There is no microSD slot, so storage cannot be expanded. The chip supports both sub-6GHz and mmWave 5G, and the phone also has Wi-Fi 6E.
Cameras
The rear setup has three cameras. The main camera has 50MP, an f/1.8 aperture and optical image stabilization. A 13MP ultrawide with a 120-degree view also handles macro shots, and a depth sensor completes the array.
The front camera has 32MP and an f/2.45 aperture. Motorola lists rear video up to 4K at 60fps, with slow motion at 1080p and 120fps. The front camera records 1080p video at 30fps.
Battery and charging
A 5,000mAh battery powers the phone, and Motorola claims up to two days of use. Wired charging reaches 30W, wireless charging reaches 15W, and reverse wireless charging reaches 5W. The box contains a USB-C cable and a SIM tool, but no charger.
Software and updates
The phone launched with Android 12 and Motorola’s My UX interface. Motorola promised three major Android upgrades, which take it to Android 15. It also promised four years of security updates, delivered every other month.
Should you buy the Motorola Edge (2022)?
This phone is no longer produced, so new units depend on remaining stock. It suits buyers who want a large 144Hz OLED screen, a big battery and wireless charging on a budget. Its plastic body, limited water resistance and missing charger are the main trade-offs. Buyers who want a newer model can look at the Edge (2023), which adds an IP68 rating.
