The Motorola Edge 40 Neo is a mid-range 5G phone from the Edge 40 family. Motorola announced it in Europe on September 14, 2023, and orders opened the same day. In Europe, it launched at €399 with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. In the UK, the official price was £299.99. An Indian launch with 8 GB and 12 GB versions followed later that month. It replaced the Edge 30 Neo, and the Edge 50 Neo later took its place.
Design and display
The phone has a 6.55-inch pOLED panel with curved edges. It runs at 1080 x 2400 pixels, or 402 ppi. The refresh rate reaches 144 Hz, and peak brightness is rated at 1,300 nits. The display supports HDR10+ and 10-bit color.
The body is rated IP68 for dust and water. It measures 159.63 x 71.99 mm and weighs 170 to 172 grams. Motorola sold it in four Pantone colors. Black Beauty, Caneel Bay and Soothing Sea arrived at launch. Peach Fuzz, the Pantone Color of the Year 2024, came later as a special edition.
Black Beauty has a matte acrylic back and is 7.79 mm thick. The other colors use a vegan leather back and measure 7.89 mm.
Performance
The phone runs on the MediaTek Dimensity 7030, a 6 nm chip. Its CPU pairs two Cortex-A78 cores at 2.5 GHz with six Cortex-A55 cores. Graphics come from a Mali-G610 MC3 GPU. European units ship with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. There is no microSD slot. Storage type differs by region, and sources disagree on it.
Cameras
The rear setup has two cameras. The main camera uses a 50 MP sensor with a 1/1.5-inch format, f/1.8 aperture and optical stabilization. A 13 MP ultrawide camera covers a 120-degree view and also handles macro shots. Both rear cameras record 4K video at 30 fps.
On the front, a 32 MP selfie camera sits in a hole-punch cutout. It can also record 4K video at 30 fps. There is no telephoto lens.
Battery and charging
A 5,000 mAh battery powers the phone. It supports 68W TurboPower wired charging through USB-C. Motorola’s official spec pages list a 68W charger in the box. Some European retail versions were sold without a charger. Wireless charging is not supported.
Software and updates
The Edge 40 Neo shipped with Android 13 and Motorola’s My UX interface. Motorola’s official Indian spec page promises two Android upgrades and three years of security updates. Other features include NFC, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos. In Europe, the phone takes one Nano-SIM and an eSIM. The Indian model takes two Nano-SIM cards.
Should you buy the Motorola Edge 40 Neo?
The phone suits buyers who want a fast 144 Hz OLED screen and IP68 protection on a budget. It also suits people who value 68W charging and a large battery. Buyers who need wireless charging or a zoom lens should look elsewhere. The software support window is short by current standards. Its successor, the Edge 50 Neo, adds newer hardware and longer update support.
