The Motorola Moto G54 5G is a budget 5G phone from 2023. It debuted in China on September 5, 2023, and reached India a day later. Europe and Mexico followed on September 14. In Germany, it launched at €199.99 with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. Motorola no longer sells it in Europe, and the Moto G55 took its place.
Design and display
The phone has a 6.5-inch IPS LCD with a 2400 x 1080 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. That works out to about 405 pixels per inch. The European model measures 161.6 x 73.8 x 8.0 mm and weighs 177 grams. It has a plastic body with an aluminum camera housing and a water-repellent design.
In Europe, it came in Midnight Blue and Glacier Blue with a matte plastic back. Indigo Blue and Mint Green used a vegan leather back. India also got Pearl Blue, while China had a limited Viva Magenta edition. A side-mounted fingerprint reader handles unlocking.
Performance
Inside is the MediaTek Dimensity 7020, a 6nm octa-core chip. It pairs two Cortex-A78 cores at 2.2 GHz with six Cortex-A55 cores at 2.0 GHz. Graphics run on an IMG BXM-8-256 GPU. The European version ships with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. A microSD slot accepts cards up to 1 TB.
The Indian model is a different build with the same name. It has a 6,000 mAh battery, 33W charging and an 8 MP ultra-wide camera. It sold with 8 GB or 12 GB of RAM.
Cameras
The main camera uses a 50 MP sensor with an f/1.8 lens and optical image stabilization. Quad Pixel binning combines four pixels into one for low-light shots. A 2 MP macro camera sits next to it for close-ups. On the front, a 16 MP selfie camera has an f/2.4 lens.
Battery and charging
The European model has a 5,000 mAh battery. It charges at up to 15W over USB-C, and a charger comes in the box. There is no wireless charging. The phone also keeps a 3.5 mm headphone jack and stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos.
Software and updates
The Moto G54 shipped with Android 13 and Motorola’s My UX interface. Motorola promised one OS upgrade to Android 14. It also committed to three years of security updates. Connectivity includes 5G, NFC, Wi-Fi 5, Bluetooth 5.3 and eSIM support next to a physical SIM.
Should you buy the Moto G54?
The Moto G54 suits buyers who want a low-cost 5G phone with a 120Hz screen and lots of storage. Its optically stabilized main camera and microSD slot add value at this price. However, the phone is discontinued and gets only one OS upgrade. Its 15W charging is also slow. If you want a newer option from the same series, look at the Moto G55.
