The Moto G84 is a mid-range 5G phone from Motorola. It was announced in India on September 1, 2023, and went on sale there on September 8. Europe and the UK followed in mid-September, and Latin America also got it. The phone came in a single 12 GB + 256 GB version. In Europe, it cost €299.99 at launch. Motorola no longer sells it in its official stores, so the Moto G84 is now discontinued.
Design and display
The phone is 7.6 mm thin and weighs 166.8 g in its acrylic version. The leather-finish models weigh 168.3 g. The frame is plastic, and the body has an IP54 rating against dust and splashes.
Motorola sold three colors: Midnight Blue, Marshmallow Blue and Viva Magenta. Midnight Blue has a glossy acrylic back. The two lighter colors use a vegan leather back.
The front has a 6.55-inch pOLED screen with a 2400 x 1080 resolution. It supports a 120 Hz refresh rate and 10-bit color. Peak brightness reaches 1,300 nits. An optical fingerprint reader sits under the display.
Performance
The phone runs on the Snapdragon 695. This octa-core chip has two Cortex-A78 cores at 2.2 GHz and six Cortex-A55 cores at 1.8 GHz. The Adreno 619 handles graphics.
Every unit has 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of UFS 2.2 storage. In Europe, a microSD slot adds up to 1 TB more. The card shares the tray with the second SIM.
Cameras
The rear has two cameras. The main one uses a 50 MP sensor with a 1/1.5-inch format. It has an f/1.88 lens and optical image stabilization. Motorola also fitted an 8 MP ultrawide camera with a 118-degree view. That camera doubles as a macro lens.
The front camera has 16 MP. Both the main and selfie cameras record video at up to 1080p and 60 fps. The main camera also shoots 1080p slow motion at 120 fps.
Battery and charging
A 5,000 mAh battery powers the phone. European models charge at up to 30 W, and the charger comes in the box. In India, Motorola included a 33 W TurboPower charger. There is no wireless charging.
Software and updates
The Moto G84 shipped with Android 13 and Motorola’s My UX interface. Motorola promised one OS upgrade, to Android 14. It also promised three years of security updates.
Other features include stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The phone also has NFC, Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1. It takes two Nano-SIM cards but has no eSIM.
Should you buy the Moto G84?
It suits buyers who want a bright 120 Hz OLED screen and plenty of memory at a low price. Its headphone jack and microSD slot also help. However, the phone is no longer produced. Its update promise covered only Android 14, and security updates were planned for three years from launch. Buyers who need long software support should look at newer models.
