The Motorola Razr (2023) is the lower-priced flip foldable of the 2023 Razr lineup. Motorola announced it on June 1, 2023, as the Razr 40 for China and Europe. The US version arrived in October 2023 with an MSRP of $699.99 for 8GB + 128GB. Early buyers paid an introductory price of $599.99. The phone is now discontinued, and the Razr 2024 replaced it.
Design and display
The inner screen is a 6.9-inch foldable pOLED panel with 2640 x 1080 resolution and 413 ppi. It refreshes at up to 144Hz and supports HDR10+. Peak brightness is 1,400 nits.
The cover screen is much smaller than on the Razr+. It is a 1.5-inch OLED panel that shows the time, notifications, quick settings and media controls. The outer shell is vegan leather, and the frame is aluminum. Folded, the phone measures 88.24 x 73.95 x 15.8 mm and weighs 188.6 g. The IP52 rating protects against light splashes only.
Performance
Inside is the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1, an upper mid-range 4nm chip. It works with 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM. The US model has 128GB of UFS 2.2 storage, and other markets also got 256GB. There is no microSD slot. In Geekbench 6, the chip typically scores about 1,040 single-core and 2,920 multi-core.
Cameras
The main rear camera uses a 64MP 1/2-inch sensor with an f/1.7 lens and optical stabilization. A 13MP ultrawide also takes macro shots. Both rear cameras record 4K video at 30 fps.
A 32MP selfie camera sits in the inner screen. The small cover screen can still act as a viewfinder for quick selfies with the main camera.
Battery and charging
The battery holds 4,200 mAh, which is more than in the Razr+ (2023). Wired charging reaches 30W. Wireless charging is supported at 5W. In India, Motorola ships a 33W charger in the box.
Software and updates
The Razr (2023) launched with Android 13. Motorola promised three Android upgrades and four years of security patches. It was also the first phone with Moto Unplugged, a mode that blocks chosen apps for a set time. Connectivity includes 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and an eSIM.
Should you buy the Razr (2023)?
The Razr (2023) is no longer produced, and Motorola has removed it from its US store. Its successor is the Razr 2024. The 2023 model still offers a large inner screen and a bigger battery than the Razr+ (2023). However, its cover screen is too small for full apps. Buy it only if you find a new unit at a low price and accept the update window.
