The Samsung Galaxy A23 is a budget 4G phone that Samsung announced on March 4, 2022. It is the LTE version of the line. Samsung also sold a separate model, the Galaxy A23 5G, with a different chip and a faster screen. The Galaxy A23 is now discontinued, and the Galaxy A24 took its place in the lineup.
Design and display
The phone has a 6.6-inch PLS TFT LCD with a resolution of 1080 x 2408 pixels. Samsung rates the panel for up to 90Hz, which helps scrolling look smoother. A small V-shaped notch at the top holds the selfie camera, and Gorilla Glass 5 covers the screen.
The frame and back are plastic. The phone measures 165.4 x 76.9 x 8.4 mm and weighs 195 g. Samsung offered it in Black, White, Blue and Peach. Color choice varied by market, and the Peach version was sold as Orange in some countries. There is no official water or dust rating.
Performance
Inside is the Snapdragon 680, a 6 nm octa-core chip. Its fastest cores run at up to 2.4 GHz, and graphics come from an Adreno 610 GPU. Samsung paired it with 4, 6 or 8 GB of RAM and 64 or 128 GB of storage. A microSD slot adds up to 1 TB.
Compared with the Galaxy A23 5G, this model has no 5G support and a 90Hz screen instead of 120Hz. The 5G version uses the Snapdragon 695 instead.
Cameras
The rear has four cameras. The main one has a 50 MP sensor with an f/1.8 lens and optical image stabilization. It is joined by a 5 MP ultrawide, a 2 MP macro and a 2 MP depth camera. Video recording tops out at 1080p and 30 fps. On the front, an 8 MP f/2.2 camera handles selfies.
Battery and charging
The battery has a typical capacity of 5,000 mAh. The phone supports 25W Super Fast Charging over USB-C, but the charger is sold separately. There is no wireless charging.
Software and updates
The Galaxy A23 launched with Android 12 and One UI 4.1. Samsung Knox security is built in from the start, and the Samsung Members app offers diagnostics.
Other useful extras include a side-mounted fingerprint reader in the power button and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. It also has dual-band Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0. NFC depends on the market.
Should you buy the Samsung Galaxy A23?
The Galaxy A23 is no longer produced, so new units are hard to find. It suits buyers who need a big battery, a headphone jack and expandable storage at a low cost. Still, a newer phone such as the Galaxy A24 is the safer choice for future updates. People who need 5G should look at the Galaxy A23 5G or a newer model instead.
