The Samsung Galaxy S22+ is the middle model of the 2022 Galaxy S22 series. Samsung announced it on February 9, 2022, and it went on sale on February 25, 2022. In the US, it started at $999.99 with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. Samsung no longer sells it, and the Galaxy S23+ replaced it.
Design and display
The phone has a flat 6.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen with a 2340 x 1080 resolution. The refresh rate moves between 48 Hz and 120 Hz, and peak brightness reaches 1,750 nits. That is brighter than the screen of the smaller Galaxy S22.
An Armor Aluminum frame holds Gorilla Glass Victus+ on the front and back. The body measures 157.4 x 75.8 x 7.6 mm and weighs 196 g. It is rated IP68 for dust and water. Samsung sold it in Phantom Black, Phantom White, Green and Pink Gold. Graphite, Cream, Violet and Sky Blue were exclusive to Samsung’s own online store.
Performance
In the US and many other markets, the phone runs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. This 4 nm chip has a Cortex-X2 core at up to 3.0 GHz and an Adreno 730 GPU. In Europe, Samsung used its own Exynos 2200 with Xclipse 920 graphics instead.
Every version has 8 GB of RAM. Storage options are 128 GB and 256 GB of UFS 3.1, and there is no microSD slot.
Cameras
The rear has three cameras. The main camera uses a 50 MP sensor with an f/1.8 lens and optical stabilization. Next to it sits a 12 MP ultrawide with a 120-degree view. A 10 MP telephoto adds 3x optical zoom and OIS.
The phone records video at up to 8K at 24 fps. HDR10+ video recording is also available. On the front, a 10 MP selfie camera sits in a small punch hole.
Battery and charging
The battery is rated at 4,500 mAh. The phone supports 45 W wired charging with Samsung’s 45 W adapter and 15 W wireless charging. It can also charge other devices through Wireless PowerShare. No charger comes in the box.
Tests by 9to5Google showed only a small gain from the 45 W adapter. In 30 minutes, the phone reached 64% on 45 W and 62% on 25 W.
Software and updates
The Galaxy S22+ launched with Android 12 and One UI 4.1. Samsung promised four major Android upgrades and five years of security updates. That makes Android 16 the last major version for this phone.
Other features include an ultrasonic fingerprint reader under the display, stereo speakers, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.2 and ultra-wideband. There is no headphone jack.
Should you buy the Galaxy S22+?
The Galaxy S22+ is discontinued, so it is mostly found used or refurbished. It still offers a bright screen, a 3x telephoto and IP68 protection. However, its software support ends earlier than on newer models.
Buyers who want longer updates can look at the Galaxy S23+, its direct successor. The S22+ suits people who want a large flat flagship from 2022 at a lower price.
