The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip5 is a clamshell foldable phone announced on July 26, 2023. It went on sale on August 11, 2023, with a US launch price of $999.99 for the 256GB model. The Flip5 is no longer sold on Samsung’s US store, and the Galaxy Z Flip6 took its place.
Design and display
The biggest change from the Galaxy Z Flip4 is the cover screen. Samsung calls it the Flex Window, and it measures 3.4 inches with a 720 x 748 resolution. As a result, you can check widgets, reply to messages and frame photos without opening the phone.
Inside, a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X panel offers a 2640 x 1080 resolution and an adaptive 1-120Hz refresh rate. A new Flex Hinge lets the phone close flat without a gap. Folded, it measures 85.1 x 71.9 x 15.1 mm and weighs 187 grams.
The frame is aluminum, and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 covers the cover screen and the back. The phone carries an IPX8 water resistance rating. However, it has no dust rating.
Performance
The Flip5 runs on a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 tuned for Galaxy phones. Its top CPU core reaches 3.36 GHz, and the GPU is an Adreno 740. Every version has 8GB of RAM, paired with 256GB or 512GB of UFS 4.0 storage. There is no microSD slot.
Cameras
The rear setup has a 12MP f/1.8 main camera with optical stabilization. A 12MP ultrawide camera joins it. The rear cameras record up to 4K at 60 fps. In addition, the Flex Window works as a viewfinder, so you can take selfies with the main cameras. A 10MP camera sits above the inner screen for video calls.
Battery and charging
The phone uses a 3,700mAh dual battery, the same capacity as the Flip4. Wired charging tops out at 25W, and Samsung says it reaches 50% in about 30 minutes. The Flip5 also supports 15W wireless charging and reverse wireless charging for accessories. A charger is not included in the box.
Software and updates
The Flip5 launched with Android 13 and One UI 5.1.1. Samsung promises four One UI upgrades and five years of security updates. Other features include 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC and a USB-C 3.2 port. The fingerprint reader sits in the side button.
Should you buy the Galaxy Z Flip5?
The Galaxy Z Flip5 suits buyers who want a compact foldable with a large, usable cover screen. Its flagship chip and long update promise still help it today. Keep in mind that Samsung no longer produces it, so new units are limited. The successor, the Galaxy Z Flip6, is the newer option in the same lineup.
