The Moto G Power 5G is a budget 5G phone from Motorola for North America. Motorola announced it on April 6, 2023, and US sales started on April 13. The unlocked model launched at $299.99 with 6 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. The phone is now discontinued. Its direct successor is the Moto G Power (2024).
Design and display
The phone has a 6.5-inch LCD with Full HD+ resolution (2400 x 1080) and 405 ppi. The refresh rate goes up to 120Hz, a step up from the 90Hz panel of the 2022 model. The screen fills about 84% of the front.
Both the back and the frame are plastic. The body measures 163.06 x 74.8 x 8.45 mm and weighs 185 grams. Motorola lists a water-repellent design, but the phone has no official IP rating. The fingerprint reader sits in the power button on the right side. Colors are Mineral Black and Bright White.
Performance
Inside is the MediaTek Dimensity 930, a 6 nm octa-core chip. Its two fastest cores run at up to 2.2 GHz, and the GPU is an IMG BXM-8-256. Typical Geekbench 6 results for this phone are about 900 single-core and 2,150 multi-core.
The unlocked model has 6 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage. Motorola also announced a 4 GB / 128 GB version for carrier channels. A microSD slot adds up to 1 TB of storage. The phone has 5G, Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.3, but no NFC for tap-to-pay.
Cameras
The rear setup has three cameras. The main camera has 50 MP, an f/1.8 lens and Quad Pixel technology. It is joined by a 2 MP macro camera and a 2 MP depth sensor. There is no ultrawide camera and no optical stabilization.
The front camera has 16 MP. The main camera records video at up to 1080p and 60 fps. The selfie camera records at 1080p and 30 fps.
Battery and charging
The 5,000 mAh battery is rated for up to two days on a single charge. The phone supports 15W wired charging. However, the charger in the box is a 10W unit. There is no wireless charging.
Audio comes from stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos. The phone also keeps a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a USB-C port.
Software and updates
The Moto G Power 5G launched with Android 13 and Motorola’s My UX additions. It also added the Moto Secure app with a PIN-protected Secure Folder. Motorola promised one Android upgrade, to Android 14, and three years of security updates.
Should you buy the Moto G Power 5G?
This phone suits buyers who want a large battery, a 120Hz screen and a headphone jack on a budget. Expandable storage and stereo speakers are also useful extras. On the other hand, it lacks NFC, wireless charging and an IP rating. Its update promise is also short.
Keep in mind that Motorola no longer sells it on its US store. The Moto G Power (2024) replaced it in the lineup.
