The Motorola Razr+ (2023) is a flip foldable that Motorola announced on June 1, 2023. Outside North America, the same phone is sold as the Razr 40 Ultra. It went on sale in Europe on announcement day. In the US, sales started on June 23, 2023, at $999.99 for the only 8GB + 256GB version. It was the top model of the 2023 Razr lineup.
Design and display
The main screen is a 6.9-inch foldable pOLED panel with 2640 x 1080 resolution and 413 ppi. It uses LTPO tech, supports HDR10+ and refreshes at up to 165Hz. Motorola rates its peak brightness at 1,400 nits.
The cover screen is the headline feature. It measures 3.6 inches, runs at up to 144Hz and reaches 1,100 nits. Gorilla Glass Victus protects it. The frame is 7000 series aluminum. The Infinite Black and Glacier Blue models have a glass back, while Viva Magenta uses vegan leather. Folded, the phone measures 88.42 x 73.95 x 15.1 mm. The vegan leather model weighs 184.5 g, and the glass models weigh 188.5 g. The IP52 rating only covers light splashes.
Performance
The phone runs on the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, a 4nm flagship chip from 2022. It is paired with 8GB of LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of UFS 3.1 storage. There is no microSD slot. In Geekbench 6, the chip typically scores about 1,740 single-core and 4,580 multi-core.
Cameras
There are two rear cameras. The main one has a 12MP sensor, an f/1.5 aperture and optical stabilization. The second is a 13MP ultrawide that also handles macro shots. Both record 4K video, the main camera at up to 60 fps.
A 32MP selfie camera sits in the inner screen. Because the cover screen is large, you can also take selfies with the main cameras while the phone is closed.
Battery and charging
The battery holds 3,800 mAh. Wired charging tops out at 30W, and wireless charging is limited to 5W. In the US, the charger is sold separately. Some other markets, such as India, include a charger in the box.
Software and updates
The Razr+ (2023) launched with Android 13. Motorola promised three Android upgrades and four years of security patches. Android 14 arrived about a year after launch, later than on many rival phones. The phone supports 5G, Wi-Fi 6E, Bluetooth 5.3 and NFC. It takes a nano-SIM and an eSIM.
Should you buy the Razr+ (2023)?
The Razr+ (2023) suits buyers who want a large, useful cover screen on a flip phone. Its successor, the Razr+ 2024, is now on sale. Compared with newer models, this one has a smaller battery and slower wireless charging. Its last promised OS upgrade is Android 16. If you find it new at a big discount, it remains a capable foldable. Check the update window before you buy.
