How we picked

We take purpose-built rugged phones that are on sale and were announced in the last two years, then rank them by our rugged score. It combines the PhoneRanked scores for performance (30%), battery (35%) and display (25%) with water and dust protection (10%). Cameras are left out, because most rugged phone makers don't publish the camera details we need to score them fairly. Only phones officially sold in the US or Europe are included. Scores are calculated from specs, so every phone is judged by the same rules. Learn more about how we rate phones.

What to look for

Check the real protection

Look for IP68 and IP69K together. IP68 covers dust and submersion, and IP69K adds hot, high-pressure water jets. MIL-STD-810H means the maker ran drop, shock and temperature tests, but each brand picks its own tests, so treat it as a sign of toughness rather than a guarantee.

Battery size versus weight

Many rugged phones pack 10,000 mAh or more and last several days on a charge, but the biggest ones weigh well over 400 g. If you carry your phone all day, a slimmer rugged model with a 6,000 to 8,000 mAh battery is much easier to live with.

Pick the extras you will use

Thermal cameras, night vision cameras, camping lights, loud speakers and walkie-talkie functions are common on rugged phones. They are great for work in the field, but they add cost and weight, so skip the ones you don't need.

Check software updates

Many rugged phone makers promise fewer Android updates than Samsung or Google. If you need a phone for work that lasts several years, check the update promise on each phone page before you buy.

FAQ

What is the best rugged phone right now?

Right now it's the Blackview Xplore 6, with a rugged score of 9.0 out of 10 and a battery score of 9.4. The DOOGEE V Max 2 Pro and the DOOGEE V Max 2 round out the top three.

What makes a phone rugged?

A rugged phone is built to survive drops, water, dust and extreme temperatures. It has a reinforced frame, usually with rubber corners and raised edges around the screen, and it typically carries IP68 and IP69K ratings plus MIL-STD-810H testing. A regular phone with IP69 resists water just as well, but it isn't built to take hard falls.

Why isn't the camera part of the rugged score?

Most rugged phone makers don't publish details like sensor size, stabilization or video modes, so we can't score their cameras fairly. Leaving the camera out keeps the comparison even. You'll find each phone's camera specs on its page.

Where are regular phones with IP69?

Many recent flagships and mid-range phones from brands like OnePlus, OPPO, HONOR and vivo resist water jets as well as rugged phones do, but they have slim glass bodies without shock protection. You'll find them in our ranking of the best waterproof phones.

How often is this list updated?

Automatically. When we add a phone or update its specs, the list is rebuilt within a few minutes. The date at the top of the page shows the last update.
